You point your phone at a flower and tap, and a photo appears. But does a camera capture a complete tiny picture, or measure light at many places? Follow the light through a simplified model of a typical phone camera: a lens, a sensor and image processing.
This beginner-friendly visual explanation shows how a lens focuses light onto a sensor, how a grid of pixels measures it, why a pixel under a colour filter measures only one colour, and how the phone estimates the missing colours and builds a photo from the numbers. The diagrams simplify the process; real phone cameras differ in lenses, sensor designs, colour filters and processing, and photo processing differs between phones.
Honest labels: the phone, the flower, the lens and the sensor are simplified models, not teardown photos. The lens is one thin lens, not a real multi-element phone lens, and nothing is to scale. The numbers in the sensor scenes come from a small illustrative model (a 96 by 64 pixel sensor with a red, green and blue filter mosaic and simple averaging) and are not measurements of a real camera. The narration is a synthetic voice.
