The Real Story Behind… The Great Escape. In March 1944, 76 Allied airmen crawled out of a tunnel called Harry under Stalag Luft III, in what is now Żagań, Poland. Only three made it home. Fifty were murdered on Hitler's orders. This is what really happened: the camp built to stop tunnels, the claustrophobic barrister who ran the escape, Tom, Dick and Harry, the night of 24 March, the manhunt, and what the 1963 film got wrong.
