2009 Euros Men's SP (Eurosport) – Helsinki | Brian Joubert, Tomáš Verner, Samuel Contesti

Summary: The men's short program at the 2009 European Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland, brought together 39 competitors in a closely contested event featuring impressive technical performances, unexpected breakthroughs and several dramatic moments. France's Brian Joubert took the lead with a personal-best 86.90 points, delivering a commanding performance featuring a quadruple toe loop–triple toe loop combination, triple Axel and triple Lutz. Defending European champion Tomáš Verner of the Czech Republic followed in second with 81.45 points, combining clean jumping with expressive choreography and musical interpretation. The day's surprise came from Italy's Samuel Contesti, formerly a French representative, whose energetic and technically assured performance earned him a personal-best 75.95 points and third place. Belgium's Kevin van der Perren overcame a painful hip injury to finish fourth with 75.80 points, narrowly behind Contesti. France's Alban Préaubert placed fifth, followed by Russia's Sergei Voronov, whose quadruple toe loop–double toe loop combination was offset by a mistake on his triple loop. Sweden's Kristoffer Berntsson entertained the audience with his Amélie-inspired routine, finishing seventh. Featuring commentary from Chris Howarth and Nicky Slater, this Eurosport broadcast captures the excitement of the closing groups, with Joubert establishing a commanding advantage heading into the free skate.
