2009 Euros Ice Dance OD "1920s–1940s Rhythms" – Helsinki | Khokhlova/Novitski, Faiella/Scali, Kerrs

Summary: The original dance at the 2009 European Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland, featured the required theme “Rhythms and Dances of the 1920s, 1930s, or 1940s”, with couples interpreting Charleston, swing, blues and lindy hop styles. Russia's Jana Khokhlova (Яна Хохлова) and Sergei Novitski (Сергей Новицкий) strengthened their overall lead with an energetic performance to Sam's Blues and Puttin' on the Ritz, winning the segment with 62.17 points. Italy's Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali finished second (59.03) with a polished Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers-inspired routine, while Great Britain's Sinead and John Kerr placed third (57.71) with an entertaining swing and lindy hop interpretation. France's Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat finished fourth, followed by Pernelle Carron and Matthieu Jost in fifth and Italy's Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte in sixth. The increasing complexity of the original dance, particularly twizzles, lifts and musical interpretation, is discussed throughout the broadcast. Notably, the British Eurosport commentators (Chris Howarth and Nicky Slater) praise the Kerrs' entertaining performance despite technical difficulties, Faiella and Scali's refined presentation, and Khokhlova and Novitski's commanding display. With defending champions Oksana Domnina (Оксана Домнина) and Maxim Shabalin (Максим Шабалин) withdrawing following Shabalin's knee injury, the Russian leaders entered the free dance with 99.60 points overall, ahead of Faiella and Scali (95.06) and the Kerrs (92.60), setting up an exciting conclusion to the European ice dance competition.
