Australia is investing in a stronger national approach to rail standards, with a stronger focus on harmonisation, interoperability and the practical adoption of standards.
To mark World Standards Day 2026, ARISO brought together senior industry leaders to provide operational perspectives on why standards matter, how organisations implement them and how those decisions contribute to national outcomes.
Industry leadership is critical. When individual operators or jurisdictions write bespoke specifications in isolation, we inadvertently introduce technical complexity, supply-chain bottlenecks, unnecessary rework, and higher total cost of ownership.
This panel explored the value of implementing standards within individual organisations and how decisions made within organisations can either reduce or reinforce differences across the national network.
