Henry Martyn Born February 18, 1781 Died October 16, 1812 11,563 days Charlie Kirk Born October 14, 1993 Died September 10, 2025 11,655 days Two men of promise, separated by more than two centuries. Yet the lengths of their lives on earth were separated by only 92 days. Both died at the age of 31. “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 “While It Is Day” sets the words of Psalm 90 beside the lives and words of Henry Martyn and Charlie Kirk. Henry Martyn was born in Cornwall in 1781 and entered St John’s College, Cambridge, at sixteen. In 1801 he became the highest-ranking mathematics graduate at Cambridge among other academic accolades. Looking back on his academic success, Martyn wrote: “I obtained my highest wishes, but was surprised to find that I had grasped a shadow.” He fell in love with a young woman named Lydia, but his changing ambitions toward missionary work eventually separated them. Martyn left the prospect of an academic career and sailed for India as a chaplain and missionary. During the few years that remained to him, he devoted most of his time and energy to preaching, language study and Scripture translation. He completed a Hindustani New Testament and later worked in Persia on a new Persian translation of the New Testament and the Psalms. In his journal, he wrote about the urgency with which he now viewed his life and work: “Now let me burn out for God.” He did not know that only six years remained. In failing health, after his work in India and Persia, Martyn attempted the long journey toward Constantinople. He died at Tokat in the Ottoman Empire on October 16, 1812. He was thirty-one. More than two centuries later, Charlie Kirk began his own public life at a young age. At eighteen, he co-founded Turning Point USA, which grew from a small student organization into a major national conservative youth movement. He was later named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30, became the youngest speaker on record at large national conventions, authored several books, and built The Charlie Kirk Show into a nationally syndicated radio and podcast program. In a 2024 interview, while speaking directly about his Christian faith, Kirk said: “I’m nothing without Jesus.” He went on to call himself a sinner who fell short of the glory of God, and described giving his life to the Lord in fifth grade as the most important decision he had made. Then, on June 29, 2025, The Iced Coffee Hour asked Kirk how he would want to be remembered if everything else disappeared. His answer was: “I want to be remembered for courage for my faith. That would be the most important thing.” Less than three months later, on September 10, 2025, Kirk was assassinated while taking questions from students at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was thirty-one. Henry Martyn and Charlie Kirk’s days on earth were numbered, but not one of them was unknown to God. “We spend our years as a tale that is told.” Psalm 90:9 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 John 9:4: “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day…” “Night cometh, when no man can work,” and only work done for eternity will stand. Scripture in the song (KJV): Psalm 90:9 — “For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.” Psalm 39:4–5 — “LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days…” / “Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth…” John 9:4 — “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 15:5 — “I am the vine, ye are the branches…” / “for without me ye can do nothing.” 2 Timothy 1:7 — “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Psalm 90:10 — “The days of our years are threescore years and ten…” Psalm 90:12 — “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:17 — “And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” Non-Scripture Quotations: Henry Martyn: “Now let me burn out for God.” Henry Martyn: “How the days and years are gone by, as a tale that is told!” Charlie Kirk: “I’m nothing without Jesus.” Charlie Kirk: “I want to be remembered for courage for my faith. That would be the most important thing.” #Psalm90 #KJV #ScriptureSong #TheScriptureSongbook This is an independent artistic work and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Turning Point USA.
