SHAKYO — 写経 | Japanese Zen Music for Deep Focus, Study and Long Work Sessions Three hours inside a temple hall at night, seen from low down near the floor, looking straight back toward the inner sanctuary. The hall is dark, and everything golden in it catches the light. On the altar at the back stands a single golden Buddha, framed by a tall, boat-shaped golden halo of fine openwork, with a round halo behind the head. To either side sits a golden Buddha, each with its own round golden halo. From the center of the ceiling hangs a great golden canopy, and around it fall strand after strand of gold ornaments, like long tassels. Golden lanterns hang throughout the hall, every one of them lit. In front of the altar, two golden candlesticks hold white candles, set among other golden candlesticks, vases and altar fittings, with arrangements of white flowers and green leaves at the left and right. Thick, round golden pillars stand on either side of the sanctuary, and nearer, at the left and right edges, rise heavy pillars of reddish black. The wall at the left has a ground of gold, painted with a long band of blue and green clouds. Overhead, a black coffered ceiling is set with gold fittings. The floor is laid with tatami, its black borders running back into the hall, and the lamplight lies across the mats. Near the front stands a three-legged metal incense burner with white ash inside. Three hours, and every lantern in the golden hall stays lit for as long as the music plays.
