NEKOMATA — 猫又 | Japanese Zen Music for Deep Focus, Study and Long Work Sessions Two hours in the great hall of a shrine at night, seen from low near the floor and looking straight ahead at the far wall. The whole wall is one old mural on a ground of gold leaf: where the light reaches it, the gold glows bright, and everywhere else it has dulled and darkened, uneven and flaking in places. At the center of the mural sits a large black-and-white cat with curly white fur, yellow eyes, a pink nose and white whiskers. Held sideways in its mouth is a single big fish with blue-green scales and reddish fins, its tail to the left and its head to the right. The cat sits in a dark kimono patterned with swirls of red and gold, with a blue-green collar, and its two white front paws are marked with black. Toward the lower right, a large white tail curls around in a spiral. A heavy beam runs above the mural, and wooden paneling lines the wall beneath it. In front, the glossy floorboards catch the light. On the floor stand a three-legged metal incense burner and a small square lantern, lit. Along the right side, thick wooden pillars stand in a row, receding into the dark at the back of the hall. Two hours, and nothing in the hall stirs.
