You Can’t Heal in Survival Mode: Why Safety Comes First in Trauma Recovery
Why can someone know they are safe, yet still feel tense, alert, uncomfortable or prepared for something to go wrong?
In this video, we explore survival mode, trauma, safety, emotional responses, relationships, bodily awareness and trauma recovery through the work of psychiatrist and trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score.
Van der Kolk’s work examines how traumatic experiences can affect more than memory. His work discusses attention, bodily awareness, relationships, emotional regulation, memory and a person's sense of safety. He has also explored different approaches to trauma treatment, emphasizing that there is no single method that works for everyone.
One important distinction in this video is that feeling unsafe does not automatically mean that you are currently in danger. Previous experiences can influence what we expect, what we notice and how we respond to uncertainty. At the same time, not every difficult reaction should be interpreted as trauma and experiencing a traumatic event does not automatically mean someone will develop PTSD.
We look at:
• Why the past can influence expectations in the present
• What psychological safety actually means
• Why constant anticipation can become exhausting
• How survival patterns can influence relationships
• Why disagreement and uncertainty can feel different after difficult experiences
• What bodily awareness adds to our understanding of trauma
• Why trauma is stored in the body is an oversimplification
• How safety can create more flexibility and choice
• What Bessel van der Kolk’s work contributes to the conversation about trauma recovery
• Why there is no single healing method that works for everyone
This video is educational, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. If trauma-related symptoms or emotional difficulties are persistent or significantly affecting your daily life, consider speaking with a qualified mental health professional. NIMH notes that PTSD and other mental-health concerns can have different causes and treatment needs and professional assessment can help determine what support is appropriate.
