Welcome to Week 3 of my 6-week Jeet Kune Do group class!
In the first two weeks, we introduced the JKD stance, footwork, movement, the lead hand, and kick defenses. This week, we take the next step by looking at one of Bruce Lee's favorite strategies: drawing an attack.
Instead of simply reacting to your opponent, Jeet Kune Do teaches you to influence what they throw so you already know what's coming. By using a lower lead hand as bait, you can encourage a predictable response and intercept it before your opponent ever gets started.
In this lesson we cover:
• Review of Weeks 1 and 2
• Footwork, angles, and the Rule of Movement
• The Pike and Cut Kick
• The Five Ways of Attack
• Attack by Drawing
• Using the low lead hand as bait
• The Pull Counter
• Intercepting the jab with the cross
• Sparring applications
One of the things I love most about Jeet Kune Do is that it isn't just about techniques. It's about creating situations where your opponent's best option is exactly the one you were hoping they'd choose.
If you train Muay Thai, boxing, MMA, or another striking art, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Do you intentionally bait attacks in your sparring, or is that something you're still developing?
If you're interested in training with me, I also offer private Jeet Kune Do lessons in Austin, Texas where we dive deeper into Bruce Lee's approach to timing, footwork, striking, and martial arts philosophy.
