Britain Had a City the Size of London — Then the Sea Took It: Dunwich
Once, Dunwich was one of medieval England's most important coastal cities. It had churches, monasteries, markets, merchants, a thriving port, and thousands of residents. Today, almost all of it has disappeared beneath the North Sea.
In this video, we uncover the story of Dunwich, the Suffolk city that was gradually destroyed by coastal erosion and devastating storms. At its medieval height, Dunwich was a major trading center and one of the largest towns in England—but its position on an exposed coastline would eventually become its greatest weakness.
Dunwich wasn't destroyed in a single catastrophic event. The sea took the city piece by piece. Powerful storms damaged the coastline, cliffs collapsed, buildings were abandoned, and entire streets gradually disappeared. As the shoreline retreated, Dunwich's population and importance declined.
We'll explore what Dunwich looked like before the sea claimed it, how wealthy the city became, why medieval people built such an important settlement in such a dangerous location, and how centuries of erosion transformed a major English city into a handful of surviving buildings.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the story is what remains beneath the waves. Archaeologists and researchers have used historical records, coastal surveys, and underwater investigation to reconstruct parts of the lost city—including the locations of churches, streets, and other structures that once defined medieval Dunwich.
Today, only a tiny village remains where a major medieval settlement once stood.
Dunwich is a warning about how quickly a powerful city can disappear when nature, geography, and time work together.
In this video, we'll uncover the rise of medieval Dunwich, the wealth that made it important, the storms and erosion that destroyed it, what lies beneath the North Sea, and why Britain's lost city has never been completely forgotten.
