Ozu is a town located in the central-western part of Ehime Prefecture. It is often called the "Little Kyoto of Iyo" because its historic streetscapes and natural scenery resemble those of Kyoto. Despite its small size, the town boasts numerous attractions, including its symbol, Ozu Castle; Garyu Sanso, a beautiful villa designated as a National Important Cultural Property; and Ohanahan-dori, a street that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. The clear waters of the Hiji River, which flows gently through the town, also offer plenty to enjoy. In the summer, visitors can take boat rides to admire the beautiful scenery or witness *ukai*—a traditional fishing method using cormorants—up close. Ozu’s charm attracts international tourists as well; while about 90% of these visitors come from South Korea and Taiwan, the number of tourists from Europe has also been increasing in recent years. At a time when classic tourist destinations like Kyoto are struggling with overtourism, why not visit Ozu—a hidden gem—to enjoy Japan's nature and culture at a leisurely pace?
