Why Does My Lower Back Hurt After Walking? Try This Daily Routine
Does your lower back hurt after walking, or does it start to feel stiff, tired or uncomfortable the longer you are on your feet?
In this physiotherapist-led session, I want you to join me and do the routine with me.
Rather than simply showing you a list of back exercises, I'll guide you through the movements just as I would during an exercise session — explaining how to perform each movement, what area we're working, why I've included it and how many repetitions to do.
We'll work on areas that can be important for comfortable walking, including lower-back and lumbo-pelvic mobility, hip mobility, flexibility and strength through the hips, glutes, legs and core.
There isn't one single reason why someone's lower back may hurt after walking. Symptoms can have different causes, and the exercises that are appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for another.
The aim of this routine is to help you:
• gently mobilise your lower back and pelvis
• improve movement around your hips
• work on useful flexibility around the legs and hips
• activate and strengthen your glutes and core
• improve the strength and movement needed for everyday walking
• build confidence with regular movement
You don't need to remember all the exercises. Press play, join me and follow along.
If your back pain is persistent, worsening, travelling into your leg, associated with increasing numbness or weakness, or significantly affecting your ability to walk and manage everyday activities, consider speaking to your GP or physiotherapist for an individual assessment.
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop new problems controlling your bladder or bowels, numbness around the saddle/genital area, or significant/progressive weakness in your legs.
