"The body is not a personal possession to be defended, but a borrowed dwelling made of the same elements that make up the rocks, the seas, the sunlight, and the open sky."
Welcome, traveler. We spend entire lifetimes defending, managing, and worrying about this physical form—calling it "my body, who I am, mine". Yet under the unclouded gaze of mindful observation, the body reveals itself as an intricate assembly of four primal natural forces.
The Four Elements contemplation (Catudhātu-vavatthāna / Dhātumanasikāra) is a foundational practice from the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta that deconstructs the illusion of a solid, permanent ego through direct somatic touchstones rather than jarring imagery:
• Earth Element (Paṭhavī): Solidity, mass, density of bones, and weight resting on the seat
• Fire Element (Tejo): Temperature, metabolic warmth, coolness, and radiant heat
• Air / Wind Element (Vāyo): Movement, expansion and contraction of breathing, pulse, and vibration
• Water Element (Āpo): Moisture, blood circulation, cohesion, and the binding fluid that holds form together
By recognizing these forces as borrowed from nature, the burden of body anxiety, vanity, and physical dread softens into deep relief. Earth rests in earth; fire rests in fire; air rests in air; water rests in water.

Whenever physical discomfort, aging anxiety, or self-criticism arises, quietly categorize the raw sensation into its primary element: "This is just heat (fire)," or "This is just pressure (earth)". Stepping out of personal ownership immediately dissolves reactivity and fear.
