The Azores are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous region of Portugal. They have approximately 240,000 inhabitants.
Ponta Delgada is the capital (approximately 70,000 inhabitants) and is located on the island of São Miguel.
Administratively, the Azores form an autonomous region of Portugal and are therefore part of the European Union.
The Azores are characterized by an oceanic-subtropical climate. Seasons and temperatures are balanced, resulting in mild winters and not excessively hot summers.
The vegetation in the Azores is lush. However, there are also barren, volcanic landscapes.
Many species of whales and dolphins can be observed off the coasts, and over 500 species of fish make the Azores one of the richest fishing grounds in the world.
The most important economic sectors are livestock and dairy farming.
Tea is also cultivated on the island of São Miguel.
Pineapples are grown in greenhouses here.
The main fish caught is tuna, which is canned.
Due to the unique climate with its mild temperatures, tourism has become increasingly important in the evergreen Azores.
Lagoa do Fogo ("Fire Lake") is a crater lake in the Água de Pau massif in the center of São Miguel Island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Construction work is prohibited around this lake on São Miguel Island.
