The Azores are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous region of Portugal. They have approximately 240,000 inhabitants. Ponta Delgada is the capital (approximately 70,000 inhabitants) and is located on the island of São Miguel. Near the port is the Portas da Cidade, a three-arched city gate. Administratively, the Azores form an autonomous region of Portugal and are therefore part of the European Union. The Azores are characterized by an oceanic-subtropical climate. Seasons and temperatures are balanced, resulting in mild winters and not excessively hot summers. The vegetation in the Azores is lush. However, there are also barren, volcanic landscapes. Verwaltungstechnisch bilden die Azoren eine autonome Region Portugals und gehören somit zur Europäischen Union. Die Azoren sind durch ein ozeanisch-subtropisches Klima geprägt. Jahreszeiten und Temperaturen sind ausgeglichen, das bedeutet wiederum milde Winter und nicht zu heiße Sommer. Die Vegetation auf den Azoren ist üppig. Es gibt aber auch karge, vulkanische Landschaften. Vor den Küsten kann man viele Wal- und Delphinarten beobachten, und über 500 Fischarten machen die Azoren zu den fischreichsten Gebieten der Welt. Bedeutendste Wirtschaftszweige sind die Vieh- und Milchwirtschaft. Auf der Insel Sao Miguel wird auch Tee angebaut. Der Ananasanbau erfolgt hier n Gewächshäusern. An Meeresfischen wird vor allem Thunfisch gefangen und in Dosen konserviert.
