What happens when the person who has seen God move suddenly finds himself overwhelmed by fear? Elijah had just witnessed fire fall from heaven. He had stood against 450 prophets of Baal. He had seen God demonstrate His power in an unmistakable way. Then Jezebel sent one message: “You’re going to die.” And Elijah ran. In this message, we look at 1 Kings 18–19 and discover something important about anxiety: anxiety doesn't always look like fear. Sometimes it looks like anger. Sometimes it looks like isolation, control, exhaustion, overworking, shutting down, or constantly trying to fix everything. The threat Elijah faced was real. But the story he began telling himself about that threat wasn't. And we have a tendency to do the same thing. Anxiety can take what we know and fill in what we don't know with what we fear. It can make us believe we're alone, that everything is falling apart, that we have to fix everything ourselves, or that we already know how the story ends. But God knew what Elijah couldn't see. In this message, we'll explore three ways to respond when anxiety starts calling the shots: Pay attention to the signal without obeying it. Test the story your anxiety is telling you. Replace what anxiety takes with what God provides. God's response to Elijah is remarkable. He doesn't simply tell him to “stop worrying.” He gives him rest. He gives him food. He gives him space. He speaks to him. And then He restores Elijah's perspective and gives him his next assignment. Sometimes relief isn't the same thing as restoration. When anxiety says, “Make me feel better,” wisdom asks, “What will actually make me better?” And when everything else gets loud, God may speak in a gentle whisper. You may not be able to control what you initially feel, but you are responsible for what you do with what you feel. If you're in a season where you're simply trying to get through it, this message is for you. #Anxiety #ChristianSermon #Elijah #Faith #MentalHealth #GodsPeace #Philippians4 #1Kings19 #Christianity #Sermon
