Saladin ruled for barely 24 years. The empire he founded lasted 89. In the end, its heart was taken by the slave soldiers his own family had bought, not by the crusaders. This is the complete history of the Ayyubid dynasty from 1171 to 1260. A Kurdish family fled Tikrit in disgrace, then rose to rule Egypt, Syria, Yemen and upper Mesopotamia. The story covers Saladin's rise in Fatimid Egypt, the long campaign to unite Muslim Syria, the Horns of Hattin and the surrender of Jerusalem in 1187, and the Third Crusade against Richard the Lionheart. It continues with the split among Saladin's heirs, the reigns of al-Adil and al-Kamil, the Fifth Crusade drowned by the Nile, and Jerusalem handed to Frederick II by treaty in 1229. It ends with the Mamluk takeover in 1250 and the Mongol storm of 1260, which finished the Syrian branch. Along the way, the documentary separates legend from evidence and follows three threads to their end: the family, the slave soldiers and Jerusalem. These threads answer one question. How did the dynasty of the Middle Ages' most celebrated sultan end up in the hands of the men it had bought? Researched and narrated as one chronological story, from beginning to end.
