Idioms can be tricky for court interpreters because a literal translation can completely change the speaker’s meaning. In this video, we review 21 idioms and common expressions that a court interpreter may hear in testimony, attorney-client conversations, legal settings, or everyday speech. You’ll see the English idiom, the meaning behind it, and a natural Spanish equivalent or meaning-based interpretation. Some of the expressions include: Take the law into your own hands The elephant in the room Seeing is believing A blessing in disguise Back to the drawing board Hit the nail on the head Mind your own business Don’t add fuel to the fire You can’t get blood from a stone Bend over backward The goal is not to force a word-for-word translation. The goal is to understand the speaker’s intended meaning, tone, and register, and then interpret that message accurately. Save this video for practice and tell me in the comments which idiom was the hardest for you. Keep learning, keep interpreting, and I’ll see you in the next video. #CourtInterpreter #LegalInterpreter #SpanishInterpreter #InterpreterTraining #Idioms #EnglishSpanish #CommunityInterpreter #InterpretWithIdalia
