Justorum Animae
Composed by Charles Villiers Stanford
The Vocal Consort Presents: Choral Footprints
Conducted by: Mr Kane Teo
"Justorum animae," composed in 1885, is a poignant representation of Stanford's choral craftsmanship. This motet draws inspiration from the Latin text of the Book of Wisdom. Stanford's composition explains that although the righteous may appear to suffer or die, their souls are safe with God and are at peace. Their passing is not a loss but a transition to immortality, free from pain and fear. It conveys a sense of serenity and introspection, capturing the essence of the text that extols the righteousness of the souls of the just.
Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt,
et non tanget illos tormentum mortis.
Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori,
illi autem sunt in pace.
The souls of the just are in the hand of God,
and the torment of death shall not touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die;
but they are in peace.
