Recently, I've Been Thinking About How to Live a Life I Haven't Built Yet

How do you build a life you aren't living yet? Recently, I’ve been thinking about Matthew McConaughey preparing for a role that hadn’t even been greenlit yet. He was getting ready for something that didn’t exist yet — almost as if he could help will it into existence by preparing for it anyway. And I thought: I want to McConaughey my life. I want to build a life I’m not living yet. But I also don’t want to spend my entire present optimizing for some future version of my life. So I’ve been wondering: how do you prepare for the life you want while still actually living the one you’re in? Somewhere in the middle of thinking about all of this, I realized I was recording this episode from a hammock. And suddenly I wondered if I’d been asking this question for so long that I hadn’t noticed I was already doing it. In this episode, I talk about: — preparing for something before it exists — building a life without constantly optimizing it — learning to enjoy the journey while still moving forward — why I used to hate fiction — discovering the joy of entering a creative world without needing it to teach me anything — and the possibility that the life you're trying to build might already be happening in small, unexpected ways Maybe building the life you want isn't just about getting somewhere. Maybe it's about becoming someone who can enjoy being there along the way. ABOUT RECENTLY Recently is a show hosted by Kylie Tyler about the things she can't stop noticing. Sometimes she has a theory. Sometimes she has a question. Sometimes she just notices something and needs somewhere to let it out. No particular destination. Just curiosity.
