GLP-1s & Wernicke Encephalopathy: A Rare Vitamin B1 Risk You Should Know About

Could GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound be linked to a rare but potentially serious neurological condition? New research is raising questions about a possible connection between GLP-1 medications and Wernicke encephalopathy, a medical emergency caused by severe vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. In this video, I break down what researchers have found so far, including reports involving semaglutide and tirzepatide, and explain why appetite suppression, persistent vomiting, very low food intake, rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiencies may be important factors. I'll also explain the warning signs of Wernicke encephalopathy, including: • Confusion or changes in mental status • Problems with balance, coordination or walking • Abnormal eye movements or vision changes Most importantly, I'll put the research into perspective. These reported cases are rare, and the current evidence does NOT prove that GLP-1 medications cause Wernicke encephalopathy. Researchers are calling for additional research and monitoring. This is also an important reminder that eating less doesn't mean your body needs fewer nutrients. When appetite is significantly reduced, making sure you're getting adequate nutrition and hydration becomes especially important.
