GLP-1s and Mental Health: What Does the Research Really Say?

Can GLP-1 medications affect your mental health? Can they cause depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or more serious psychiatric symptoms? In this video, we take a closer look at what the research and regulatory agencies actually tell us about GLP-1 medications and mental health—including recent findings involving semaglutide and other GLP-1 medications. I’ll look at: • What the FDA and EMA have found regarding suicidal thoughts and behavior • A large 2026 Swedish study examining GLP-1 medications and worsening mental illness • What researchers are learning about GLP-1 receptors in the brain • “Food noise,” emotional eating, and the psychological changes that can come with weight loss • Two recent psychiatric case reports involving semaglutide • Why a symptom occurring while taking a medication does not automatically prove the medication caused it • Warning signs that deserve medical attention The overall research is reassuring at the population level, but that doesn't mean every individual will have the same experience. Case reports and personal experiences can raise important questions without proving causation.
