GLP-1s and Dementia: What the Latest Alzheimer’s Research Really Shows

Could GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound affect your risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease? The research is fascinating—but the answer is more complicated than some headlines suggest. In this video, we look at the latest research on GLP-1 medications and brain health, including observational studies suggesting a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia, possible effects on inflammation and vascular health, and the results of the major EVOKE and EVOKE+ trials testing semaglutide in people with early Alzheimer’s disease. The EVOKE trials did not show that semaglutide slowed cognitive or functional decline—but that doesn't necessarily answer the question of whether GLP-1 medications could play a role in preventing dementia. We'll look at what researchers know, what they don't know, and what this research could mean for people taking GLP-1 medications for diabetes or weight management.
