The 911 call taker who answered the morning Faith Hedgepeth was found takes the stand. Then the State plays the recording, and her voice is on it. Linda Holp is retired now. In September 2012 she was a call taker at the Durham Emergency Communication Center, a job she held for, in her words, "A little better than eight years." On the morning of September 7, 2012, she picked up the emergency line and stayed on it until police reached the caller. This is Day 2 of the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in Durham County Superior Court, State of North Carolina v. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares. Faith was a UNC student in 2012, and this jury is hearing the case in 2026. Mr. Salguero-Olivares is presumed innocent of the charges. The State calls Ms. Holp for one job: to tell the jury that State's Exhibit 14 is the call she took. Watch how the State lays the groundwork before the jury hears a second of audio. Are the calls recorded automatically? Does the center keep them? Is her voice on this one? Then comes the question I want you to catch: is it an exact copy of the 911 call? Her answer is "No." The caller's phone number has been silenced, and she tells the jury nothing else was changed. Nobody in the room asks who made that edit or when. Should someone have? Then the recording plays in open court. Keep your ear on the call taker. Over and over she says "Listen to me." When the caller says "I don't know," her answer is "You need to check and see." She tells the caller not to touch anything else in the room and to make sure the door is unlocked for the medics and the police. Near the end she says, "I just don't want you to be alone right now." The caller gives her name on the recording as Karena Rosario, Faith's roommate. Here is the process question. A recording reaches a jury only after someone with knowledge says it is what the State claims it is, and the other side gets its turn to test that. The State told the court this exhibit was already marked and admitted, so Ms. Holp puts a person behind the audio. Then the judge turns to the defense: "Cross-examination, Mr. Rainsford?" The answer is "No, Your Honor." One reading: the defense has no quarrel with this recording being what the State says it is. Another: its fight is over what the call means, and that fight belongs to other witnesses. I'm not the jury and neither are you. Only the jurors decide what this call proves.
