What happens if you don’t attend a voluntary police station interview? Can you simply ignore the request, or could the police arrest you instead?
In this video, Manjinder Kang, Director and Solicitor at Kang & Co Solicitors, explains the potential consequences of not attending a voluntary police station interview and why the word “voluntary” should not be taken to mean that the request can simply be ignored.
A voluntary police interview is still part of a formal criminal investigation. If the police consider an interview necessary and you agree to attend but then fail to do so, arrest may become necessary to enable the interview to take place.
Ignoring the interview does not necessarily bring the investigation to an end. The police may continue their enquiries without you, and failing to engage may also mean losing an opportunity to respond to the allegations or provide information relevant to your position.
In this video, Manjinder explains:
• Why “voluntary” does not mean there are no consequences
• Whether you could be arrested if you fail to attend
• Why the police investigation can continue without you
• Why ignoring the interview will not necessarily make the matter go away
• What you should do if you cannot attend the proposed date
• Why obtaining legal advice before making a decision is important
