Healing became harder when I stopped asking only: “What happened to me?” and finally asked: “What was mine to own?” For years, I could name the things that hurt me. I could explain why I stayed, why I came back, what I feared, and how much of myself I lost trying to hold my family together. All of those things are part of my story. But they aren't the whole story. Eventually I had to look in the mirror and acknowledge something uncomfortable: My choices had consequences too. I stayed in a marriage long after I knew we were broken. At the time, I believed staying was protecting my children and preserving our family. Looking back, I can see that holding on also kept all of us inside a life that wasn't allowing any of us the possibility of discovering what something different might have looked like. Maybe I could have found myself sooner. Maybe my husband could have built a different life. Maybe our children could have experienced something different too. I'll never know. And that's important. What Was Mine to Own isn't about pretending I know what would have happened if I'd made different choices. There are no guarantees that another road would have been easier or better. It's about accepting that staying was a choice too. My husband has his own story and his own choices to understand. My children have their memories and feelings, and those belong to them. And I have mine. You have your part And I have mine I won't carry yours Or hide behind mine. For me, those words are what accountability looks like. I can understand why the younger version of me made the decisions she did without pretending every decision was the right one. I can forgive her without excusing everything. I can acknowledge the ways I was hurt while also acknowledging the ways my own fear affected the people I loved. And I can finally say: This part was mine. Not all of it. Not theirs. Mine. And I'm ready to own it, learn from it, forgive it, and stop carrying it into the woman I'm becoming. Sometimes healing isn't finding someone to blame. Sometimes it's sitting quietly with yourself while the storm passes and finally becoming brave enough to tell the truth.
