If your elbow aches after open play or your hand buzzes when you block a hard ball, the problem might not be your stroke. Most players over sixty are told to buy the lightest paddle they can find. That's only half right. Here's how to choose a paddle you can hold loosely, with no brands and no sponsors, and how to check most of it with the paddle you already own.
In this video:
• Piece 1 — Weight. Why nobody agrees on what "light" means (the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook sets no weight limit), what a very light paddle asks of your arm, what a heavy one costs you at the net, and why the middle is the place to start.
• Piece 2 — The handle. What Harvard Health says about gripping tightly and twisting the wrist, how to measure your grip size with a ruler, the index-finger check, and what to do if you're between sizes.
• Piece 3 — The core. Thick (about 16 mm) vs. thin (about 13 mm): control and a softer feel vs. more pop, and the ping-or-thud check you can run on your next hard block.
• Piece 4 — Shape and face. Standard vs. elongated (sweet spot, reach, swing weight), graphite and carbon vs. fiberglass, the USA Pickleball power limit and the "USA Pickleball Approved" mark, what about price, and when to retire a paddle.
• For elbows, shoulders and hands that complain: which piece to check first, and a grip-pressure exercise you can do tonight at the kitchen table.
• The key that ties it together — grip pressure — and what Earl meant by "held like a bird."
Next time you block a hard ball, listen: does your paddle ping or thud? Write one word in the comments.

⚠️ Please read: This video is for general education and entertainment only. It is not medical advice and does not treat, cure or prevent any injury or condition, including tennis elbow or arthritis. A paddle is not a treatment. If your elbow, shoulder, wrist or hands hurt, talk to your doctor or a physical or hand therapist before changing equipment or playing more. Try a new paddle in short sessions, move within a comfortable range and stop if anything hurts. Never repair or rebuild a damaged paddle; retire it. Protective eyewear is recommended on the court. Results vary from player to player and nothing here is guaranteed.
