Doctor Spots Disturbing Sign on 5-Year-Old’s Neck

Emergency physician Dr. Brian McGrath testified that 5-year-old Paitin Fields arrived at Pender Memorial Hospital around 3:50 a.m. critically ill, minimally responsive and showing signs of seizure activity. McGrath said he immediately noticed an “unmistakable” linear pattern of petechiae and bruising across Paitin’s neck, which he testified was consistent with strangulation and raised concerns of non-accidental trauma. He said the medical team worked to stop her seizures, secure her airway and stabilize her before she was transferred to a pediatric intensive care unit in Wilmington.
