In "The Mario Game" Mario finds himself trapped in an abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere - the objective is clear, but the solution... not so much. There are various rooms to explore, and the exit is not always obvious - yet there is no time to waste, as a wall of darkness closes in within each of these rooms. Once the screen goes completely black... it’s over.
This hack was Daizo Dee Von's entry for SMW Central's 1st Halloween Level Design Contest, held from 10/05/2014 to 11/10/2014.
Out of a total of 20 entries, "The Mario Game" placed 4th, scoring 62 out of a possible 70 points.
The entries were judged by S.N.N., and scored by adherence to theme, overall design, creativity & aesthetics (which would also include music).
Most of the music was composed by Daizo Dee Von; additionally, a port by Moose - which had just been released at the time - is featured at the beginning and end of the hack. This track from "E.V.O. The Search For Eden" serves as the hack's main theme, while the music by Daizo Dee Von creates a mysterious, unsettling atmosphere throughout the level itself.
The tracks "Wandering Souls" from "Terranigma" & "Shock" from "Clock Tower" were added for the v2.5 release of the hack.
"Wandering Souls" plays over the "Nintendo presents" screen (or in this case: the DDV logo) and as such, only the first note of the music can be heard during a regular playthrough. "Shock" is used in an added easter egg room.
Daizo Dee Von officially released his tracks on 12/21/2014 during SMW Central's Winter C3 event. This release included a few tracks that didn't appear in the hack as originally intended.
These tracks are "You Died! (Cut Ver.)" & "...Give Me Your Answer Do ("Game Over" Original Ver.)".
In addition to that, "You Died... (Revised Ver.)" was slightly adjusted to make it sound less empty.
In October 2020, Daizo Dee Von also revised "Dancing Mario":
through tuning, the track was made to sound more distorted, further intensifying its eerie effect.
An updated version of "Your Situation..." did appear in the hack "Alpha Sphere" / "Alpha Sphere: Director's Cut" (2019~2021), but that's something for another time... ;)
For now, let's-a press play to start... THE MARIO GAME!?!

Additional notes:
-The track "Dancing Mario" is based on the track "Gramophone 1" from the game "Clock Tower" composed by Kouji Niikura, although the main melody is replaced with Koji Kondo's "Overworld BGM" from "Super Mario Bros.". The arrangement also uses the samples from the "Clock Tower" original.
