Unlike most countries, South Africa does not have a single capital city. Instead, it has three traditional capitals: Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein. But why? In this video, we explore why South Africa has three capital cities, how this unusual arrangement came about, and what each city actually does. Pretoria is the administrative and executive capital, where the President, Cabinet and many government departments are based. Cape Town is the legislative capital, where South Africa's Parliament, including the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces sits. Bloemfontein is traditionally known as the judicial capital and remains home to the Supreme Court of Appeal. And then there's Johannesburg. It's South Africa's largest economic centre and has been home to the Constitutional Court since 1994, but it isn't one of South Africa's traditional capitals. So why did South Africa end up with three capitals in the first place? The answer takes us back to 1910 and the creation of the Union of South Africa, following the Anglo-Boer Wars. With Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein each having their own political histories, choosing just one city as the capital was politically difficult. The solution was a compromise: divide the major functions of government between different cities. More than a century later, that arrangement still exists. But is having three capitals actually a good idea? Does it make government more representative or does it create unnecessary expense and logistical problems?
