As grief, guilt, paranormal communication, and the hope of hearing a familiar voice begin to overlap, comfort can become something much darker. This film was inspired by the analog horror audio “Mama?” created by Rotting Marigolds. The first time I heard it, my mind immediately started building a different horror story around the feeling of the audio. The voice, the sadness, the tension, and the unsettling idea of hearing someone you desperately want to hear again. This short film is NOT the official story behind “Mama?” and it is not intended to explain, replace, or reinterpret Rotting Marigolds’ original narrative. My film is an original spinoff concept inspired by the emotion of that audio: a supernatural horror story about grief, loss, a mother and son, spirit communication, and how desperation can blur the boundary between hope and danger. I’ve wanted to experiment with the growing language of analog horror and YouTube horror. A distorted voice, strange radio interference, an old recording, or a familiar sound in the wrong place can create more fear than a huge visual reveal. I wanted to merge that kind of internet horror with a cinematic short horror film built around character, atmosphere, psychological tension, paranormal themes, and visual storytelling. Sound is a huge part of horror for me. I’m an audiophile and love building detailed sound design into my films. Water, room tone, silence, radio noise, distant ambience, creepy voices, and tiny sounds inside an empty house can create dread before anything is visible. This film let me push that idea further and let sound, grief, and supernatural tension work together.
