Have you ever finished a day that was completely full and still not been able to say what you did with it? We tend to reach for the word lazy, and it is almost never the right word. Most of us are going flat out. The problem is not effort. The problem is that we are in four places while standing in one, and by the end of it there is nothing much that stayed. This is a gentle morning prayer for anyone who is tired in a way that work does not explain. We read a one line prayer in the eighty sixth Psalm where David does not ask for a stronger heart or a cleaner one, he asks for his heart to be made into a single piece. We sit with a whole population in Haggai who were sowing, eating and earning, and were told to set their heart upon their roads. We find the single eye wedged between a passage about treasure and a passage about two masters. And we finish with a king who prayed his way to the last honest line he had. If today is going to be full, this prayer is about walking into it as one person.
