Did you lie awake again last night, watching over something you had already given to God?
This morning prayer for anxiety and sleep is for anyone who got up tired today. The thing you keep turning over. The situation that has not moved. The tomorrow you lay there living through before it arrived. Jesus said take no thought for tomorrow, and most of us take all of it, most nights.
We begin where the night actually begins, with God awake in the room the whole time. We sit with David, writing about lying down in peace while people were still speaking against him. With the psalmist who wrote thou holdest mine eyes waking, so nobody has to feel strange about a night like that. With the promise that the One who keeps you will neither slumber nor sleep, not the deep sleep and not even the doze. With Elijah, who asked to die and was given sleep and food before he was given a single word of instruction. And with Jacob, who slept on a stone in the open and woke saying surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.
Then we pray. For rest, for peace over the mind and the body, for the nights to be taken back. There is also a prayer here for the heaviness that is more than tiredness, for depression and for mental health, asking God to meet you inside it, and for the courage to reach for the help He has put in the world.

If this prayer was yours today, type these five words below: God kept me last night. And if you feel able to, tell me one thing that has been keeping you awake, so it does not sit in your chest alone. When you scroll past somebody else's words, lift theirs up too.
Send this to somebody who has not been sleeping. You probably know who.
