【宇和島城】102年前の10分の1の模型を手がかりに、江戸の天守の柱が1本戻った

四国の西の海辺です。愛媛県宇和島市に宇和島城があります。江戸時代の天守が今も残る城の一つです。 その天守の1階に入ると、暗がりに太い柱が並んでいます。天守の中に、もう一つ天守が立っています。壁も瓦も床の板もありません。本物の10分の1で、柱の太さまで10分の1です。1860年の修理の札に、模型のことは一行しかありません。雛形新規出来。作った理由は、札にも修理の報告書にも市の説明にも書かれていません。 1601年に藤堂高虎が手紙で命じた「まず瓦を葺き塀を塗って」の工事、岩の上に直に建っていた最初の天守、朽ちた所を朱で描いた図を添えた1662年の「元の通りに建て直したい」という願い、松で建った天守とシロアリの害に重ねた修理、1945年の戦災、そして1960年に始まる天守を全部解いて組み直す修理と第二室戸台風まで。1962年の修理工事報告書と城戸久の1943年の論文、国土地理院の標高をもとに天守と城山を3Dで作り、海に面した城から今の1階の模型までをたどります。 This is the western seaboard of Shikoku. Uwajima Castle stands in the city of Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture, one of the castles whose Edo-period keep still survives. Step into its first floor and thick pillars stand in the gloom. Inside the keep stands another keep. It has no walls, no tiles and no floorboards. It is one-tenth the size of the real thing, down to the thickness of the pillars. On the plaque from the repair of 1860, the model gets a single line: hinagata shinki deki, "a model, newly made." Why it was made is written neither on the plaque, nor in the repair report, nor in the city's account. From Todo Takatora's letter of 1601 ordering the tiles and walls finished first; the first keep, built straight on the rock; the petition of 1662 to rebuild "as it was," sent with a drawing that marked the rot in vermilion; the keep of pine and the repairs that termites kept demanding; the war damage of 1945; to the repair begun in 1960, which took the whole keep apart, and the Second Muroto Typhoon: drawing on the 1962 repair report, Kido Hisashi's 1943 paper and GSI elevation data, we rebuild the keep and the castle hill in 3D and follow them from the castle on the sea to the model on the first floor today. Where the documents are silent, we fill the gaps with estimates and say so in the video. The drawings shown on screen are generated from our own 3D model. Some details are simplified for clarity. Past scenes (the castle hill and sea of 1601-1664, the first keep, the stone base of 1662, the 1860 repair site, the Meiji hill, the town in July 1945, the 1961 scaffold roof and typhoon, the third floor before and after the repair, the brand) and the thumbnail are illustrations based on the sources. The first keep's form is an estimate from Kido Hisashi's 1943 paper. Coastlines, turret sites, the town and fires, ships, people and the repair shed are schematic. The model is an illustration, its placing schematic, its height calculated from the real keep. The sources do not say where the model was while the keep was taken apart. The camera's descent to the model is a device, not a record of where it stood. In the frame diagrams, the numbers come from the report but the positions of the vermilion and the colors are schematic. The 1662 drawing, the 1664 castle drawing and the paper's figure are schematics drawn for this video; old texts are set in type from the report. The lifting of the frame in 1783 is the report's surmise, and the height is exaggerated. The special relationship with the shogunate and the reason for the old keep on the 1664 drawing are Kido's views. The portrait of Todo Takatora (1907 copy) and the photographs of the keep (1928) and the Otemon gate (before 1945) are public domain. The termite footage is illustrative and not from Uwajima Castle.
