Andrew Carnegie never signed the notes. In 1904 a Cleveland banker held a sealed package for Cassie Chadwick and signed a paper saying it contained securities and a note for $5,000,000. For nearly two years nobody opened it. The story going around the banks was that she was Carnegie's secret daughter. One letter to Carnegie could have ended it. Nobody sent that letter.
This History Forensics case file follows the paper trail: Elizabeth Bigley's forged letters and "heiress" calling cards in Ontario, the 1879 insanity acquittal, the Toledo forgeries and nine and a half years in the Ohio Penitentiary, the marriage to Dr. Leroy Chadwick and the house on Millionaires' Row, the famous half hour at the Carnegie mansion (a later retelling, labelled as such), Iri Reynolds' certificate, the collapse of the Citizens' National Bank of Oberlin, the opening of the package on 9 December 1904, and Carnegie's own answer: "Never signed such notes." We also audit the legends: the fainting meet-cute, the wedding-night confession, the money belt at her arrest, and three very different dollar totals.
Documents shown are real: the forged $500,000 "Andrew Carnegie" note and her assignment of it to C. T. Beckwith (1922 facsimiles), Reynolds' testimony, and 1904-1907 newspaper reports of the bank run, the arrest, the package, the signature test, the sentence and her death.
