An emotional farewell to Captain Socceroo. On 1 November 1996, Paul Wade made his final appearance for Australia as the Socceroos faced Tahiti at Bruce Stadium in Canberra. When he left the field in the 60th minute, a standing ovation recognised a captain who had given a decade of commitment, courage and pride to the green and gold. It was a moment to honour one of Australian soccer's most respected servants. Australia provided a fitting farewell with a commanding 5-0 victory in the second leg of the 1996 OFC Nations Cup final, sealing the championship 11-0 on aggregate. Kris Trajanovski scored a hat-trick, with Robbie Hooker and a Tahitian own goal completing the scoreline before 9,421 spectators. Wade's international career finished with Australia crowned champions of Oceania. Wade retired as Australia's most capped senior international, having made 84 appearances and scored 10 goals. He captained the Socceroos in 46 senior internationals, leading the national side from 1990 to 1996. His tireless work in midfield and willingness to put the team first made him a central figure in an era that brought together locally based players and Australians establishing themselves overseas. His international journey included the 1988 Seoul Olympics and two World Cup qualifying campaigns. Among its defining moments was the responsibility of marking Diego Maradona during Australia's unforgettable 1993 World Cup play-off against Argentina. For a generation of supporters, "Wadey" embodied the determination of an Australian team prepared to take on the world's best. Wade's contribution to Australian soccer extended far beyond the captain’s armband. The 1988 NSL Player of the Year and a 1995 Medal of the Order of Australia recipient for his service to sport and the community, he continued promoting the game through television commentary, coaching clinics and work with young people. This footage marks the international farewell of a player whose influence continued long after his final Socceroos appearance.
