Yoga for seniors is not about flexibility or performing advanced asanas. A regular, appropriately adapted practice can help maintain strength, balance, mobility, coordination and independence as we age.

In this video, Hansaji presents a gentle yoga routine for adults over 60 that includes:
1. Sahaj Bhavasanas to gently mobilise the fingers, wrists, shoulders, ankles and toes
2. Talasana for posture, leg strength and controlled weight shifting
3. Yogendra Utkatasana for the thighs and hips, with chair support when needed
4. Virabhadrasana for leg strength, hip stability and upright posture
5. Trikonasana for gentle lateral movement, coordination and balance
6. Marjariasana-Bitilasana for spinal, shoulder and hip mobility, including a chair-based option
7. Vakrasana to maintain comfortable spinal rotation
8. Setu Bandhasana to strengthen the hips and legs and mobilise the spine
9. Pavanamuktasana for gentle lower-back movement and abdominal massage
10. Anulom Vilom and Bhramari for comfortable, steady breathing and relaxation
11. Shavasana, Makarasana or Dradhasana for physical and mental relaxation
12. Simple cleansing practices such as Jivha Moola Shodhana, Kapalarandhra Dhouti and Karnarandhra Dhouti
The emphasis throughout is on comfort, controlled movement and adapting each practice to individual ability. A sturdy chair or wall can provide useful support, and movements can be made smaller when needed.
Seniors with osteoporosis, painful joint conditions, a history of falls, serious balance difficulties, uncontrolled blood pressure or other medical conditions should seek individual guidance before beginning a yoga programme. The free Samatvam consultation at The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, is also available on Saturday afternoons for personalised holistic guidance.
The aim of yoga in later life is to remain strong enough for daily activities, steady enough to move with confidence, mobile enough to maintain independence and relaxed enough to rest well.
