Narration: It was evening. All the villagers were standing in a small barren field beneath a huge banyan tree. There was a tunnel underneath the tree.
Rama (shouting): Hey! Come out, you thieves! How long are you going to hide in this hole like rats?
Shakuntala (shouting): Look, villagers! This entire family has been secretly living underneath the roots of this tree!
Ramu (shouting): Just wait until the moneylender arrives. He will teach them a lesson!
Narration: Beneath the roots of the banyan tree was an entire hidden house, and the whole family was standing inside it.
Kaushalya Devi (worried): Oh God, Shalini! The villagers have found out that we're hiding here. What will happen now?
Shalini Ji (nervously): I knew it, Maaji. These villagers will never let us live peacefully.
Govind Ji (sadly): Everything is over. Now that moneylender will throw us out of this place too. We'll end up on the streets.
Narration: But why was this family forced to build a home beneath the roots of a tree? Why were the villagers troubling them? What helpless situation had forced them to hide underground? To find out, we need to go back some time.
Some Time Earlier
Narration: It was early morning. Everyone in the house was asleep, but Shalini Ji was already awake.
Shalini Ji (loudly): Bahu, wake up! It's morning already. Look at the condition of the house. Get up and sweep and mop the floor. I've brought some yellow clay too. Plaster the kitchen properly so the house looks a little cleaner.
Savita (pretending to be sick): Ah, Maaji! I'm feeling terrible. I think I have a fever, and my head hurts. I can't sweep, mop, or plaster the floor today.
Shalini Ji: This is your everyday drama! The moment there's work to do, you suddenly get a fever!
Savita: I'm telling the truth, Maaji. I'm really sick.
Narration: Shalini began sweeping the house herself while muttering angrily.
Priya: Maa, why are you doing everything alone? Come on, we'll finish all the work together.
Narration: Shalini and Priya began cleaning the entire house. Meanwhile, Savita sat comfortably in her room, laughing.
Savita (happily): Hahaha! That worked perfectly. I acted so well that I deserve an Oscar! Now I can sleep peacefully.
Narration: But Chintu saw everything.
Chintu: Dadi! Dadi! Mummy is laughing! She said she acted really well and deserves an award. She doesn't have a fever!
Shalini Ji (angrily): What? I knew it! This woman does the same drama every day. Priya and I do all the work while she lives like a queen. I'll deal with her right now!
Narration: Shalini angrily entered Savita's room.
Kaushalya Devi: Wait, Shalini! I'm coming with you.
Narration: Kaushalya Devi and Shalini entered Savita's room.
Kaushalya Devi: Elder Bahu, will you never change? At least fear God! The day you actually become sick, nobody will believe you. Now get up and work!
Narration: Savita hurriedly got up and left.
By afternoon, everyone was sitting together and eating while Shalini and Priya prepared rotis on the stove.
Govind Ji: Rajesh, look at your younger brother Sumit. He cleans at the hospital and supports this entire family. Aman is still studying in college. You're the eldest son. What are you doing? You know how much money we owe Sher Singh. Look at this house—we don't even have enough money to repair it. Why don't you find a job?
Rajesh: Bapu, you know my health isn't good. It's not like I don't look for work. I go out every day, but there's simply no suitable work for me in this village.
Shalini Ji: You'll only find work if you actually go outside and meet people! You don't even leave the house properly. How will you find a job?
Kaushalya Devi: He's been lazy since birth!
Rajesh: Fine! I'll go find work today. Now stop shouting at me.
Narration: Rajesh left the house and went straight to a large tree outside the village, where he fell asleep.
Chintu spotted him and rushed home.
Chintu: Dadaji! Papa isn't looking for work. He's sleeping under the big tree outside the village!
Narration: Govind Ji, Shalini and Kaushalya Devi angrily reached the tree carrying sticks.
Govind Ji: Wake up, you useless fellow! So this is your job hunting?
Shalini Ji: There's barely any food at home, the moneylender is after us, and you're sleeping here like Kumbhakarna!
