Restoring a 1700s farmhouse comes with its challenges, and this week, the weather certainly hasn't helped. We've had plenty of rain on site, meaning there hasn't been much filming until the end of the week. But as work progresses, we're uncovering some of the issues that make restoring a property of this age such an important job. One of the biggest problems? Cement mortar. Cement is incredibly hard compared to traditional lime mortar, and on older properties, that rigidity can contribute to the faces of the bricks breaking down and blowing off. This leaves the brickwork exposed, damaged and more porous, creating further challenges for the long-term preservation of the building. That's where the right restoration methods matter. We've now started repointing using a breathable, lime-based mortar that's more compatible with traditional brickwork. Unlike hard cement pointing, lime mortar allows moisture to move through the joints and evaporate, helping the historic masonry manage moisture more naturally. The aim isn't just to make this farmhouse look better. It's to preserve the original brickwork, protect the building's character and help it stand for another 300 years. This is episode 2 of our ongoing 1700s farmhouse restoration series, documenting the work, the challenges and the progress as this property undergoes a major transformation.
