Wasan Session: Learnings from the Weaving Lab, with Ross Hall
What does it take to connect people, projects and places so that they add up to more than the sum of their parts? In this Wasan session, Ross Hall, co-founder of the Weaving Lab, shares a decade of learning about weaving. He defines it as “the practice and profession of connecting people, projects and places in coherent and synergistic ways.”
Ross explains why weaving matters: many brilliant people work towards universal wellbeing, but the work stays fragmented. He then walks through the four dimensions of weaving: nurturing relationships, collaborating for systemic change, learning together, and being a better system. He also shares honest lessons from building the Weaving Lab, a volunteer-run learning community of about 1,500 people. Those lessons cover rhythm and ritual, voluntarism and privilege, core teams and edges, and disappointment and hostility. His working conclusion is that the deepest weaving practice may be softening one’s ego and staying present with both suffering and joy.
The session closes with a conversation about one of weaving’s hardest questions: how do you show funders that connection work makes a difference?
