Renault paid about $5 billion in 1999 to rescue Nissan. 26 years later, that stake cost it a €9.3 billion write-off and an €11.2 billion loss in a single half-year. Bigger than its pandemic loss.
How does a rescue turn into a bill that size? We follow the money from the 1999 alliance and Carlos Ghosn's Nissan Revival Plan, through the 2023 reset, the failed Honda-Nissan merger and Luca de Meo's exit, to the write-off of July 2025. And we look at what still works at Renault today.
