I Flew a Tiny Bush Plane Into Africa's Mountain Kingdom

Eddie phoned at half six and said get to the airfield. We were wrecked from days of flying already, but you don't say no to that. What started as a half-asleep morning turned into one of the best days of bush flying I can remember, river flying, a border hop into Lesotho, a fly-in full of weird and wonderful aircraft, random grass strips, and a golden-hour formation flight with Kevin, the guy who designed the Orion Cub. He doesn't get out to fly much, so having him on our wing at sunset felt pretty special. This isn't a polished flying film. I was too busy actually being there to film it the way I normally would. Maybe that's the point. The next morning we flew an Orion Cub all the way across the country to Johannesburg; a plane we'd only just met. My cup is full. Huge thanks to Eddie, Kevin, Tristan, Keaton, and everyone involved, and especially to Ernest for trusting us to fly his new Orion Cub home to the factory. That was a privilege. What a cool adventure; we made it across South Africa.
