Styx Valley: Mid Styx, Grassy Flat & Harman Huts

Four days/three nights exploring the Styx Valley, staying in Mid-Styx Hut, Grassy Flats Hut and a day trip to Harman Hut towards Browning Pass in October, 2023. Day 1: We finished the Paparoa Track at lunchtime, drive to Hokitika, resupplied and headed to the Styx Valley road end at Dorothy Falls near Lake Kaniere. We left the car park at 5.30, hoping to get to Grassy Flats Hut - 4 hours according to the sign - or at least Mid Styx. The Styx Track has suffered damage in the lower parts, so you now need to use the track on the true left go up Tyndall Creek and use the track via Mid Styx Hut before dropping back to the Styx River, cross it and pick up the track on the true right. We reached Mid-Styx Hut at 11pm. Day 2: It took us three hours to get to Grassy Flats. With rain developing in the afternoon, we opted for a lazy hut afternoon instead of heading on to Harman Hut. Day 3: A day trip to the head of the Styx Valley and on to Harman Hut. We tried to reach the lake below Browning Pass but ran out of time. Day 4: We headed back down the Styx for the road end. It took 7 hours on the way back - the section down Tyndall Creek being a bit easier to find in daylight!
