A simple hand squeeze can predict how long you will live — and in one massive study, it beat blood pressure as a predictor.
A February 2026 study in JAMA Network Open (University at Buffalo) followed 5,472 women aged 63 to 99 for 8.3 years. Women with the strongest grip (over 24 kg / 53 lbs) had a 33% lower risk of death than the weakest group (under 14 kg / 31 lbs). Every extra 7 kg (15 lbs) of grip strength was linked to about 15% lower mortality — even in women who skipped the recommended weekly cardio. A 2026 UK Biobank analysis of nearly half a million adults and the 140,000-person PURE study point the same way: grip strength tracks total-body muscle, and muscle is protective.
But here is the honest truth: these are observational studies — a link, not proof. And a hand gripper alone will not extend your life. Grip is the thermometer, not the treatment. In this video: the 3-move, no-equipment home routine — dead hangs, chair-stand squats, and the farmer's carry — plus 3 everyday self-tests (jar, grocery-bag, chair).
