For patients with frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) whose external rotation is limited and painful, and who can't reach behind the head or back. The problem: reaching behind the head and back, and turning the arm out, are limited and painful. Why start elsewhere: when the shoulder is painful, PNF doesn't start with the shoulder. The shoulder blade and the trunk move with the arm, so treatment starts there — indirect treatment. The intervention: scapular patterns, upper trunk rotation and arm patterns in side-lying, amphibian and supine positions — then the same patterns in sitting. 0:00 The problem 0:29 Why it happens 1:08 Intervention 4:58 Summary Techniques: Replication, Rhythmic Initiation, Combination of Isotonics, Dynamic Reversals, Stabilizing Reversals Patterns: scapular anterior elevation / posterior depression, upper trunk rotation, bilateral symmetrical arm pattern, arm flexion–abduction–external rotation Purpose: increase the mobility of external rotation of the glenohumeral joint and of the AC and SC joints, starting away from the painful shoulder.
