Sheikh Afzal Hossain | Bangladeshi Artist | The Poetry of Rural Life
What stays with us from the places where we grow up? How do memory, landscape, and everyday life find their way into painting?
In Episode 2 of STUDIO AMI — Creative Minds of Bangladesh, we enter the creative world of Sheikh Afzal Hossain, a renowned Bangladeshi realist painter and art educator whose paintings explore rural life, village landscapes, and everyday human experiences through textured surfaces and earthy tones.
Born in 1960 in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh, Sheikh Afzal Hossain grew up surrounded by rivers, green fields, and rural landscapes that continue to resonate in his artistic practice.
He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, under prominent artists including Mohammad Kibria, Kazi Abdul Baset, and Rafiqun Nabi. Later, a Monbusho scholarship took him to the University of Tsukuba in Japan, where he pursued further studies in fine arts. His artistic journey also includes the study of Sumi painting and contemporary Japanese printmaking.
Alongside his painting practice, he has contributed to art education in Bangladesh through his work as an educator at the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka.
In this episode, we explore the relationship between childhood memories and painting, his journey from Bangladesh to Japan and back, the influence of rural life on his artistic vision, and the evolving relationship between art practice and teaching.
