Dr. Philip Blair is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and board-certified family physician. He graduated from West Point in 1972, trained as an Army family doctor, and served as a combat physician in the first Gulf War. Since 2014 he has worked with non-psychoactive cannabinoids, and today he researches a terpene called beta-caryophyllene, or BCP.
BCP is not cannabis and it is not psychoactive. It shows up in ordinary things: black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, basil, oregano. What interests Dr. Blair is that it binds to CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. In this episode he explains what that system does, why he moved on from CBD, and how he thinks about getting a compound like this into the body.
We also get into his path from West Point to family practice, and what changed his mind along the way.
