Why the New Guinea Jungle Is More Dangerous Than the Congo
At three in the morning on May 24, 2024, a hillside in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, gave way and buried a village under up to eight metres of soil and rock. Thousands of kilometres away, the Congo Basin sat silent and flat. One covers 3.7 million square kilometres. The other squeezes its jungle up a 4,509-metre mountain. You would bet on the bigger jungle to kill you. This video explains why that bet can be wrong.
The thing that decides whether you survive seven days with no outside help is not the animal. It is the clock: how many hours stand between an injury and the first doctor. We compare both jungles on exposure and on rescue, using real numbers on malaria, snakebite, rivers, distance and one landslide that sealed off a province.
