Reading scales for kids with Hash Brown the owl! In Hash Brown's Kitchen we bake Judge Roo's birthday cake, and every ingredient needs a scale read just right.
The one skill: find the step size, then read between the marks.
Find the gap between two numbers, then count the SPACES (not the lines) to get one step.
Hop from the number below to read the scale.
Halfway between two marks is half a step more (about 325 mL).
Zero the bowl first, and watch for scales that don't start at 0.
Kilograms and grams: 1 kg 300 g = 1.3 kg.
Pause and predict at each "Your turn!". For Year 4 and 5 (Australian Curriculum: interpreting unmarked and partial units on scales).
